Mixmag Lab Johannesburg
MoBlack’s Mixmag Lab in Johannesburg is a geographic and sonic statement, pulling the focus to the rich, percussive heart of Afro house. It’s a welcome reminder that the most compelling rhythms often come from outside the usual European circuits, and we’re all just grateful tourists. The vibe is earthy and spiritual, a connection to soil and sky mediated through thumping kicks and shaker patterns. Technically, this is deep, percussive house with a distinct Afro-centric swing.
The BPM sits at a groovy 124.1 on average, with the resonant 12A key providing a bright, open harmonic bed for the complex rhythms. The energy is overwhelmingly in the low-end (0.60) and mid-range percussion (0.39), with almost no distracting highs (0.01), creating a warm, immersive, and physically hypnotic experience. The tracklist is a celebration of the scene’s depth. Caiiro’s ‘Mapoch War’ is a monumental, chanting opener that immediately establishes territory.
Inna’s ‘Love’ gets a subtle, driving rework, while Darksidevinyl’s ‘Kana’ offers a darker, more minimal loop. The crown jewel is MoBlack’s own collaboration with Enzo Siffredi, ‘Shikiria (Day Mix)’ featuring Mariam Zawose—a seven-minute epic of intertwining vocals and rolling percussion that feels both ancient and utterly fresh. The set begins with the ceremonial ‘Mapoch War’, builds around the central pillar of ‘Shikiria’, and closes with the deep, soulful resonance of Stones & Bones’ ‘Amahloni’, remixed by Manoo.
