Chris Luno at The Cove
Anjunadeep Explorations 2024 (Deep House DJ Set)
Another day, another idyllic Anjunadeep Explorations set we watched on a screen, dreaming of being there. Chris Luno at The Cove is the sound of that fantasy—balmy Mediterranean air, deep house, and the gentle lapping of waves just audible beneath the kick drum. The vibe is pure daytime bliss, a shaded cove where the music is as much a part of the landscape as the water. Technically, this is deep house of the highest order, cruising at a laid-back 124.6 BPM average and spending significant time in the bright, major lift of 12A, with moodier detours into 5A and 3B.
The energy is wonderfully balanced for a long, sunny session: a solid, groovy low-end (0.57 avg) supports expressive mid-range melodies (0.33), with just enough high-frequency information (0.09) to keep it crisp. Luno’s mixing is smooth and unhurried, letting tracks like Awka’s seven-minute ‘O Mar’ unfold completely, building a journey through texture and mood rather than brute force. The harmonic progression feels natural, like a slowly changing sky. The track selection is impeccable.
He opens with the beautiful, drifting ‘My Last Attempt’ Rampue Remix by Oliver Koletzki, setting a tone of melancholic beauty. KC Lights’ ‘Sol’ is a sun-drenched anthem in waiting, while the classic London Underground Mix of X-Press 2’s ‘Say What!’ is a flawless injection of timeless, vocal-led house energy. The pairing of Alan Fitzpatrick & Jamie Jones’s ‘Sundancing’ with Tim Green’s ‘Tears’ shows a keen ear for modern, melodic progression. The journey begins with the ambient-leaning Koletzki remix, builds to a peak with the driving, acidic pulse of ‘Say What!’, and ends on the reflective, instrumental grace of Bruce Jeffers’ ‘Said & Done’—a perfect deep house day party.
